Dr. Aws Al-Taie has published a scientific research entitled

“Understanding Surface Flashover Strength in Cryogenic Helium Gas for Superconducting Devices”

in the prestigious journal “IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity” (Volume: 29 , Issue: 5 , Aug. 2019). The journal is indexed in Clarivate Analytics with an impact factor of 1.692.

The paper demonstrated the development and fabrication of a surface flashover experiment setup, which can be used at both room and cryogenic temperatures to characterize surface flashover in a GHe environment, and the obtained results. The work was crucial for developing GHe cooled HTS devices for power applications since one of the limitations is determining suitable insulation designs. There would be significant reductions in cost, time, and effort if insulation designs could be accurately measured and characterized at room temperature instead of cryogenic temperatures. The insulation of HTS power devices contains solid insulation materials, and it is necessary to confirm that the interaction between the solid insulation and GHe is also independent of temperature.

Seminar on High Voltage Engineering

    A seminar entitled

“Advances in High Voltage Engineering”

was held in Al-Furat conference room in the Electrical Engineering Department by Dr. Aws Al-Taie on Thursday, 23rd of Jan. 2020.

The seminar demonstrated the concept and aspects of the High Voltage Engineering, the power sector challenges, the innovative solution of Superconductors, and the advanced high voltage research and the hierarchy of the scientific research at The Center for Advanced Power Systems, Florida State University, where Dr. Al-Taie finished his Ph.D study.

In addition, Dr. Al-Taie talked about the High voltage facilities in the Power and High Voltage Lab (PHVL) in EE Dept. University of Technology (UoT) and the ability of rehabilitating it, so it can be very useful for performing verity of experiments, conducting research work, and testing electrical power equipment.

The workshop was attended by Head of Electrical Engineering Department, Asst. Prof. Dr. Montadher Sami Shaker, the Administrative Deputy Head of Department, the Head of the Electrical Engineering Branch and a number of EE dept. , UoT , Al‑Mansoor University College and Al‑Mamoon University College faculty members. By the end of the seminar, many questions asked by the audience, and the presenter answered them elaborately.

“Versatile Paschen's model for the dielectric strength estimation of binary and ternary gas mixtures”

in the prestigious journal “IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation” (Volume: 26 , Issue: 5 , Oct. 2019). The journal is indexed in Clarivate Analytics with an impact factor of 2.135.

The dielectric strength of various binary and ternary gas mixtures is accurately estimated by using the proposed versatile Paschen's model. Unlike the conventional Paschen's models, the new model is based on the improved regression process of the ionization coefficients that results in enhanced accuracy in the dielectric strength estimations of pure gases as well as binary and ternary gas mixtures. Compared to the conventional models, the dielectric strength values estimated by the proposed model and the experimental breakdown measurements show more close and consistent agreement. The results confirm the effectiveness, versatility, and veracity of the proposed Paschen's model in estimating the dielectric strength of gas media.
